ASTM A709 Grade HPS 50W Steel Plates

High-performance structural steel plate designed for heavy civil and bridge applications where increased strength, toughness and extended service life are required. ASTM A709 Grade HPS 50W is a quenched-and-tempered, high-performance structural (HPS) alloy produced to the ASTM A709 specification for bridge and structural steels.

Key features

• Conforms to ASTM A709 Grade HPS 50W and the applicable provisions of ASTM A6/A6M for structural plate ordering and certification.
• High-strength, low-alloy steel: Grade HPS 50W is specified to provide higher minimum yield strength than conventional structural steels (commonly used at approximately 50 ksi / ~345 MPa range) with improved fracture toughness and weldability for demanding bridge and infrastructure use.
• Quenched & tempered production option: heat treatment consists of austenitizing at not less than 1600°F (900°C), quenching in water or oil, and tempering at not less than 1100°F (590°C); heat-treating details and results are reported on material test documentation when supplied in this condition.

• Hardness options: soft, half-hard, quarter-hard, hard, spring-hard (as applicable to supplied product form)

Chemical and mechanical verification

• Heat analysis and mill test reports are provided to verify chemical composition (C, Mn, P, S, Si, Cu and other specified elements) and mechanical properties per ASTM A709 requirements.
