A low-alloy, weathering-grade hot-rolled steel plate engineered to form a protective oxide layer (patina) that reduces corrosion in many outdoor and industrial environments. CORTEN A (weathering) steel is commonly used where reduced maintenance and long-term performance are required without continuous painting.
Key features
- Weathering/anti-corrosive performance: develops a stable protective surface layer that slows further corrosion compared with ordinary carbon steel in many exposures.
- Hot-rolled product with mill surface condition suitable for structural, architectural and heavy-fabrication uses.
- Available shapes: sheet, plate, coil and angle steel; suitable for cutting, welding and fabrication.
Standard supply dimensions
- Width: 1220–4200 mm
- Length (cut plates/sheets): 5,000–18,000 mm
- Coil supply: coil thickness ≤ 25 mm (other coil/plate thicknesses available on request)
Typical applications
- Bridges, rail vehicles and rolling stock
- Structural components for buildings and seaports
- Containers, tanks and oil/chemical platform structures (including applications exposed to H2S-containing atmospheres where weathering steels are specified)
- Architectural façades and landscape elements where the characteristic weathered appearance is desired
Buyer benefits
- Extended service life and lower repainting/maintenance costs in many outdoor applications
- Material available in common heavy-plate and coil formats for large projects and repeat fabrication
Ordering information
For accurate pricing and lead time, provide required form (sheet/plate/coil/angle), thickness, width, length, quantity, surface finish requirement and any certification (mill test report, chemical/mechanical tests) required. Cut-to-length, edge preparation and packing options can be arranged per project requirements.
