A canned motor centrifugal pump integrates a fully enclosed electric motor with a centrifugal pump in a single, seal-less unit designed for leak-free transfer of liquids. By enclosing the rotor and stator separated by a thin, non-magnetic corrosion-resistant sleeve and using liquid-immersed bearings, this design eliminates dynamic shaft seals and external leakage — making it especially suitable for handling hazardous, toxic, flammable, valuable or corrosive liquids.

Selection and operational guidance

  • Liquid cleanliness: because the annular gap and bearings rely on the pumped liquid for cooling and lubrication, the fluid must be free of solids, gels, precipitates or coking material. Do not use for slurry or heavily contaminated media unless a specifically designed model for slurries is selected.
  • Cooling and circulation: many canned motor pumps include circulating cooling lines; verify whether external circulation or heat exchanger connections are required for your application.
  • Freeze protection: when ambient or process temperatures risk freezing, provide anti-freeze jackets or accompanying piping to ensure reliable start-up.
  • Valve sequence: follow correct valve operation procedures: when starting, open outlet valve then inlet valve as specified by the manufacturer; when stopping, close outlet valve first, then inlet valve after the pump has stopped.
