Furfural (furan-2-carbaldehyde) is an industrial organic aldehyde used primarily as a specialty solvent and chemical intermediate. It is widely employed in petrochemical refining as an extractive solvent to separate dienes (feedstocks for synthetic rubber) from other hydrocarbons, and as a precursor to furfuryl alcohol and other derivatives that are co-polymerized with phenol, acetone or urea to produce high-performance resins. These resins are used in applications such as fiberglass composites, aircraft components and automotive brake systems.
