2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate (C12H24O3, MW 216.3; CAS 25265-77-4) is a specialty ester alcohol widely used as a high-performance coalescent and coalescing solvent in waterborne (latex) paint and coating formulations. It is particularly effective with (meth)acrylic, styrene, and vinyl acetate–based binders, where it helps promote film formation, improve gloss and leveling, and reduce the minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT).

Key features and benefits

  • Effective coalescent for a broad range of waterborne resins, including acrylics, styrene-acrylics and vinyl acetate emulsions
  • Helps achieve uniform film formation, enhanced surface appearance and improved film strength
  • Compatible with many common formulation ingredients used in architectural and industrial coatings, as well as adhesives

Typical industrial uses

  • Architectural and industrial waterborne paints and coatings
  • Emulsion polymers and latex systems
  • Pressure-sensitive and other water-based adhesives

Handling and storage

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible materials. Keep containers tightly closed when not in use. Follow applicable local regulations and standard industry safety practices for handling solvents and specialty esters.

For formulators: request a certificate of analysis (COA) and typical properties (viscosity, density, flash point if applicable, purity) from your supplier to confirm suitability for your specific formulation and regulatory requirements.
